I always thought that I MIGHT have a problem with an issue like this, but after seeing this wonderful, intelligent, caring man interact with MY first grade daughter, I would be PROUD if he was HER teacher, but he is not. =)

IDK, First graders are too young to judge anyway. The problem always enters when adults come into play!

what goes on in the personal life of any man is really no ones business.

as long as he is a really good teacher and proves it by your daughter coming home with having learnt something new everyday, then every thing should be fine.

it is not ever appropriate for a teacher to talk about his or her sexuality at any grade level. so if this is not discussed with your daughter i promise she will not know the difference between a straight male or a gay male. she will just like or respect her teacher at best.

hope this was helpful

I don't think it's bad. I mean, if I was a parent it might freak me out a bit, but I'm not. I have plenty of gay guy friends and they're the same as other people. But let's say a very openly gay man is teaching a senior class of high school teachers. That doesn't seem okay. Actually, I think it would be a good experience for kids to have him as a teacher.

By the way thanks for answering a question of mine way back...I think you are right.

Now. In answer to yours.

Openly gay can mean more than one thing. Sometimes, it's too open. But, in general an open person has much to fear and should be respected for there courage. Anyone willing enough to lead a new way would be worthy of my attention and support, If they can treat me the same way. I think we all have things that we were told to hide but then again there are things I just don't wish to share.
I think courteous edict should play a bigger role then it does these days (and I mean in a full circle kinda way). I guess I'm still stuck in a time warp, were, honestly, I would have been burnt at the stake 100 yrs ago for my open views and yet I wish we could go back to a more discreet way of the day to day life.
The majority of gay couples I have known are private about there activities but open about there lives, as most couples I know. But then there are those who chose to expose more in depth things about themselves and I really wish I didn't know, but after hearing such things it becomes too late. But that kind of person is not limited to the gay community it's much broader then that. Whew, boy can I yammer on. Great question.
I'd like to add, that I had one really great teacher (grade 6) she was open about being black. Honestly? I didn't notice untill she mentioned it. What I mean was, I was too young to know the history, I didnt think anything was wrong with my Keorea Gameacian black gay or female priciple if you get what I mean. I simply was not aware untill I got older what the Flip was going on. I am grateful now that I remeber her voice (not the words) regarding things I faced later. Please keep this in mind if your friend could take this story to heart, the children would be equipt with the tools they need to ignore ignorance and share insight with as much wisdom and passion as Ms Finlay.

is a straight male teaching a class of females any different? If anything, I'll feel save having the gay dude around my daughter than the straight dude. Besides, gay men are strong people in the mind and if they can openly come out with their sexual status in a world where EVERYONE hates them, then he/she is alright in my book. thats the kind of role model I want around me and my kids if that teaches them to stand up for what they beleive in or feel. Isnt that the American way? ---I'm sure Los Angeles has way worst problems without the help of one gay teacher..

I had an openly gay Sociology teacher and that was interesting, because that is what Sociology is about, dealing with society and differences and similarities within it. So he actually could incorporate his dealing with being gay (which at the time I was 14, gayness was not open and/or well known about). I am Christian, however, I am not w/o sin so who am I to judge. He was a great guy never made any of us feel uncomfortable and he genuinely was one of my favorite teachers ever.

Being openly homosexual doesn't necessarily mean that the teacher would force or impost their agenda on the kids, but I would be very watchful. I am do not believe people are "born" that way and I am unaware of any reliable medical evidence to the contrary. It is a lifestyle choice...a choice that conflicts with what my Bible tells me.

Fortunately, my wife and I have the ability to send my daughter to the private school of our choice. We don't have to worry about issues like this.

I have no problem with that. The thing i do have a problem with is FLAUNTING your sexuality. Even straight people shouldn't do that, it's rude!!! But some of the best friends i have are gay. They are wonderful people because they are wonderful people, and it has nothing to do with their sexuality at all.

I don't care if a gay man is flamboyant.

But if he is talking about his lifestyle to first graders, that is another story.

6 year olds don't have the mental capacity to understand certain things.

If he is proud of being gay, he´s got to be gay everywhere and all the time. He´s got to take consequences as well.

He is as human being as others and could may be very good teacher. There should be no discrimination on the basis of sex.
