I can think of a million things he would like, but they are all pretty expensive.

he is a smart guy who love to read, so I have already got him a book that I know he'll love. We are short on cash this year. What do you recommend? I can do anywhere up to another 40$ probably.

Ah, bless you both. He's likely worried about being able to buy your gift too.

Some of the suggestions already posted are great. Hubby knows you're on a limited budget. Give him the book ... and write a loving note inside. It will be something he will always have, and treasure.

Things don't really matter, hon. I picked up one of my books just today, and found inside a sweet note written by my daughter, who died last year. I'll never part with that book ... or that note.

You did not mention if you have kids or not, but, if you do, take the kids to Walmart, have their pictures made and then let the kids make their own picture frames out of different color construction paper. He knows that resources are limited and there is nothing that he would love more than a picture of his kids and wife with some creative thought behind it. He can take the pictures to his work and display them. He will feel like a million dollars to show off his family and the work they did to make his day special. I love crossword puzzles and Reader Digest, maybe a year subscription to Reader's Digest and some crossword puzzles, keep his brain stimulated, in the bedroom also, lol. Best of luck.

Try to go to some of the sales that they are having for instance like walmart they have nice things that are cheap and you are not going to have to spend to much like maybe a book case to carry his books here and there or maybe some nice clothes like a sweater or a pair of paints or some shoes. Or an mp3 player they have alot for only 20.00 dolloras.

Does he play video games/? Buy him a game he's been eyeing, but hadn't bought yet. Or, do something more personal, like getting his favorite picture of you, or both of you, printed and framed. I did that for my hubby, and he still has that picture next to his bed after 8 years.

Good Luck...;)

iTunes gift card. Or $10 gift cards to 4 of his favorite places - coffee shop, sports store, etc. That way he'll think of you a lot.

why don't you buy a good movie that you know he will like; OR light some candles and do a strip tease for him - make some chocolate covered strawberries - give him an "us" night - with you and him... cook him a homemade dinner and dessert from scratch with candles and wine..

It really depends on what he likes to do other than reading.
If he like video games- get him a game, if he is into cars get him a model car of his favorite car, or driver if he is a NASCAR fan, like my self. It all really depends on what type of person he is.
