When I was a little fellow, in my little way of thinking, I heard the song as, "We three kings of ORI and TAR", thinking that ORI and TAR were two towns at some distance from Bethlehem.
"Bearing gifts we TRAVER SO FAR", another phrase that was a little confusing, traver instead of travel, well, OK.
Was I a little off, or what?

I know, I did learn the proper words a little later, but I was just a little guy at the time.

Don't feel bad, PAD-D . I know when my daughters were little, they were going to be in a Sunday school play for Christmas services, when we were stationed in Albany, GA. They came out of Sunday school that morning and told their Daddy and I they were to be angels at the Nativity and the youngest was upset, saying," I don't wanna be no old angel, Mamma. I want to be one of the 'Wise Guys'." lol

That sounds like the songs I heard when I was a wee one. They didnt make much sense, but they sounded pretty. I also remember some boys who made up their own lyrics, which were usually x-rated,at least for the time. The words that are running through my mind right now are:
We Three Kings of Orient Are.
Tried to smoke a yellow cigar.
It was loaded and exploded
That was when the nun smacked us.

"We three kings of oil and tar,
Tried to smoke a rubber cigar.
It was loaded and exploded,
Sending a soul afar."

That was the the silly version, way I heard it as a kid.

The real song says:

"We three kings of Orient are,
Bearing gifts we traverse afar.
Field and fountain, moor and mountain,
Following yonder star."

"We three kings of Orient are
Bearing gifts, we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain
Following yonder star"

This is the story, in song, of the travels of three Oriental wise men to the manger of the baby Jesus as revealed in their visions.

Peace, love and blessings to you during this magical time of the year

Merry Christmas, Happy Hannukah, Happy Holidays, whatever suits your particular religious/pagan affiliation!

Yes, we sang it all the time at Christmas time, too. Actually, the Feast of the Epiphany is traditionally when the Magi came to visit which is the 12th Day (12 days after) Christmas.... January 6th. This is also the day in many Latin countries that is the day that people exchange gifts there.

AND....... drum roll...... It's my birthday. So if any of you want to start saving now, you'll make my 61st a great one. ;+)

GOOD luck..... to me... hahaha :+|

Yep.

When I was about 10 or so, my equally smart-a**sed cousins would sing:

"We Three Kings from Oil and Tar,
Drinking beer with Hedy Lamarr...."

Am I showing my age er what?

Yes, I remember. I had fun with "Three Little fishes in an itty bitty pool!" I'm still not sure if that is right!
