This could be a number of things....the jerking you're referring to could be the engine "surging" or it could be the a transmission shift solenoid functioning slowly.
Should you continue to drive it until taking it into a shop? That depends, the best option for you now is going to be to drive it to a local auto parts store (Autozone, O'reilly's, etc) and have the error code that caused your check engine light to come on pulled. This code will tell you what malfunctioned and give you a general idea of what you're in for to get it repaired. A tech at the store will pull these codes for you at no charge and give you a printout of the error(s). This can also be of assistance when you take the car in for repair....you'll already know what's wrong and should have a pretty good idea of what it will cost to fix it...it can greatly aid in not getting screwed!
In the meantime (or if you don't want to get the codes pulled) be very gentle when driving the vehicle. Check your tranny fluid level and your engine oil as well. Grandma it around town and you should be fine.
Hope this helps!

Right now I am driving a 97' Saturn Sports Coupe 2. This happens to me from time to time, but generally only when I am accelerating at higher speeds. On the assumption that you have an automatic, this could just be your car getting old and not doing as good of a job switching gears as it used to. Hope this helps.

I would guess you might just need more transmission fluid.
