How can one claim to be "poor" or "needy" if there is no money left after making that car payment on a late model SUV, paying for cigarettes and bottled water, buying designer jeans and designer jewelry? Shouldn't that money go to healh insurance and food?

SOME poor are/have made bad choices and are suffereing the consequences. Those that refuse a hand UP in life should not receive anything. Those that unable to use a hand UP should recieve help.

Yes, that money should go to food, shelter, and health insurance. No one is going to disagree with you.

Yes, of course, but then some of us choose to be poor by some people's definitions.

I've always had money in the bank since the age of 10 but still manage to live on less than $17 per day by living off of what other poor people throw out (except for food).

Many of the people I've seen who have had their gas shut off for non-payument of bills spend 10 times what I do each month by failing to properly shut their double hung storm windows or by leaving the doors and windows open when it's freezing outside.

Even having an empty refrigerator costs money - filling it with water jugs or empty egg/milk/??? cartons will keep it colder for not having to re-cool the warming empty space over and over.

Saving money in order to make bulk purchases at much lower prices is another way.

Most of the problem lies in a lack of self-discipline on the part of those who spend like there's no tomorrow.

"Poor" as recoginized by the government and assistance communities is determined by family or household income and not how much or how the money is spent. As for the bad choices being made, certainly we are all free to make our own choices and are in our current situations based upon the choices that each of us makes.

Why am I not a doctor? Because I chose not be one.
Why don't I make a million dollars a year? Not sure about that one but I'm sure it has somethign to do with the choices that I have made in my own life.

thats what I keep telling these people here. I save all my refunds at the end of the year instead of buying crap I dont need and when I get raises I never live outside my means. I also dont sleep around to keep from being a single mother. There is so much that people can do from staying poor but somehow everyone blames the government or the white man.

People need to distinguish between needs and wants. Sometimes people cannot distinguish between the two. If you make poor choices, it can lead to difficulties whether you are poor or rich. If you beleive you are poor, start by putting your priorities right.

Some, yes. I have known quite a few who've practiced this and to this day b*tch about never having any money/being behind on the bills. Yet, they're smoking cigarettes & weed, drinking beer and eating fast food. They've got cable and flat screens. The kids want to know why there's nothing in the fridge but beer and a couple packages of ketchup (or, better yet, their obese from stuffing junk food down their throats since the day they could eat solid food), and the landlord is knocking on the door. This is rampant. Like it or not. It does NOT serve any of us to turn a blind eye to it.

It would be nice if the government was a bit more selective with benifit recipients. I know what you mean and it pisses me off. If someone owns a big SUV, or a lexus and goes out to eat 5 nights a week, they should not get any governmetn assistance.

The cell phone bill money could at least insure the family's children. I have absolutely no sympathy for people who would rather have stuff instead of insuring their family. The fleas of 1,000 camels should invade the crack of their asses.

chemcook: my sister-in-law is like that. You are in denial ,you sad little man.

Looney: At least your name fits your philosophy.

Whatever. We're a disposable culture that constantly bombards us with 'buy, buy, buy.'
How great to have all that superficial crap but not live in a safe, healthy home or have a secure job with health benefits. You know, the types of things no welfare system provides.
