my only symptom ive been having is painful urination (no blood). im sexually active with one partner, we use protection.

my question is should i see my family doctor or a GYN? i'm registered under a new insurance plan (HMO) so i will be seeing a new MD either way. im 23yo female and i want to have a gynecological exam too (ive never had one before).

would it matter if i see a GYN or a family practitioner?

I'd recommend that you go to a family doctor first to get a full check up. They can also do a gynecological exam and will refer you to a GYN if need be.

Painful urination may not be a gynecological problem (could be kidney stones, etc.). Good luck.

I suggest strongly you see a GYN . She can test your urine as well as the other things a doctor does. Seeing a gyn is best for the pap and other tests plans. They specialize in it. This is not to say that GP don't know their stuff, but at your age, you really should have a thorough Women's health exam, and tests. I see my GP for other things, like illnesses or other health issues, but my GYNo is the one I see for ANY issues I have down there. She is trained for that specifically. The GP is up on the latest for other illnesses, but they just touched on the women's health down there. My gyn is also a surgeon, so, if I ever needed female help, she can do it, and I would know who I am dealing with.

It really should not matter which one you see. Either can help you with this issue. However, if you go to a family doc and he/she feels that it is an issue that would best be dealt with by an OB-GYN then he would refer you to one. You may eliminate some time and money by going ahead and going to an OB-GYN first. Ya know? You really should get a pelvic exam since you're 23 and have never had one....OK, so I say go with the gyno. :)

Either one will do, but if it were me...I'd see the GYN.
