I think your number is about right. It seems like every year I had at least one that wasn't right in the head.
6 subjects. 1 whack-job. 17% (plus or minus 3%) makes your 20% estimate within the acceptable range.

Very few, if any, and, with three degrees, I've had about forty. Some were contrary and hard to get along with, and a few didn't really know how to teach, but I'd say they were all sane. One had been hospitalized with a nervous breakdown not long before I had her, but she had evidently recovered well and was an excellent teacher

I had one who was definitely barking mad.She was an abusive nun. She believed in victorian discipline on one hand, and on the other was into 70's pyschobabble stuff. She used both for absolute psychological terror of her pupils. She would humiliate fat kids by having them lined up infront of the class then telling them to 'hold in their stomachs' while the rest of the kids laughed (and she wouldn't silence the kids' laughter--this, from the woman who would give detentions if you even returned a library book an hour late.) She tried to break up kids' friendships by pitting best mates against each other academically--& there was no guarantee the 'best man' would win, just whoever sister Elaine thought would suffer the most from it. She hated tv,thought all the world's problems came from it,and hence gave us so much homework we couldn't even have 5 minutes spare. (I was 9 years old btw). She told us once to take a 40 page story from our school reader and write EVERY LINE in our own words--this was to be accomplished in ONE night (plus our other homework!) She also picked on kids who had family tragedies or who had medical problems. Her classroom was full of spies and snitches too--they would peer over your shoulder while you worked and then report you if they say you make an error--i remember once I made the terrible dire mistake of using....THE WRONG COLOUR PEN!I got shouted at and humiliated for it, even though I'd already realised the mistake and had started the paper over.
my friend's dad was a dr and when he went to her to complain about his daughter'streatment, he said he thought she was mentally unstable and had some kind of a severe breakdown in the past.

I think the older they get the more awful children have deteriorated their minds because probably 40% of my teachers have been a little crazy, including one who used to break down crying in the middle of lectures but i guess thats just the way things work ;)

lots of the old hippies are teaching now, that's why scores are down. So i'd say about 80 percent of your teachers have killed lots of their brain cells (don't be coy either let them know they are sinners, and broke the law by experimenting with drugs!!) God help us
