St. Andrew is the patron saint of Scotland. He is the fisherman apostle. The Picts, who were the very early Celtic people in what is now Scotland, converted to Christianity and won a battle against the English due to the miraculous appearance of St. Andrew's cross in the sky. Thereafter the saint's day became a national holiday with feasting and celebration. There is a traditional cake called :
St. Andrew's Cake
1 pound flour
1 tsp salt
1/2 TBS yeast
1 tsp sugar
1/2 cup warm water
1 egg. beaten
1/2 cup butter. melted
1/2 cup currants or raisins
1/2 cup sugar
1 TBS diced, crystalized lemon peel

Sift flour and salt in a bowl. In another small bowl, stir the yeast and 1 tsp sugar into the warm water. Let sit until bubbly and frothy then add egg. Add egg mixture to flour, then stir in melted butter and mix until smooth. Knead well, cover, and let rise until doubled. Deflate dough and knead in currants, sugar, and lemon peel. Transfer dough into a greased loaf pan and let rise until doubled (about 20-30 minutes). Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 60-70 minutes until risen and golden brown. Cool on rack, serve with butter.
