States that tend to support Republican presidential candidates (red states) also tend to receive more from the federal government than they send in taxes. Thus red states are welfare states.

That's a good question, and it does not surprise me that despite all the whining, the red states take far more than they give back. such hypocrisy!

Those who like to separate the states into so-called red and blue buckets will no doubt notice that the "losers" (the states that give more than they receive) are predominantly blue states such as California, New York, etc. But that shouldn't be a surprise, because it's a natural result of the taxation system: people with higher incomes pay more taxes than they get back in government services; people with lower incomes get more back than they pay in. Consequently, states with more high-income people look like "losers" compared to states with more lower income people. That's just the natural result of the tax system's redistributive effects, and the more progressive the tax structure, the more pronounced the redistributive effects. No surprise, in other words. It has zero to do with who voted for who in what election to anyone with a working brain.

Liberal Blue “donor” States help conservative Red “welfare” States through the federal tax system. The federal tax system moves money from the liberal Blue States to the conservative Red States. Liberal Blue States, in general, receive back less in federal money than they contribute while conservative Red States receive more than they contribute.

The irony is that the conservative Red States residents are always talking about “self-sufficiency.” The Red States also vote for Republicans at the national level. Reform is needed. Factoring out social security and Medicare, no state should receive more in federal money than it contributes.

And you can thank a Democrat for the excessive welfare recipients. Why bother to improve themselves when everything is given for free. There is no incentive to do anything but reach out their hands.
