80% of humanity, the religious folks, don't need to ask the meaning of life, the church tells them....the supernatural explanation. But the rest of us can't swallow religious dogma, because there's no evidence. Nobody can prove that there life after death, that people are tortured or rewarded after life or that there's invisible spirits running around.

I've come to two conclusions recently:

1. Life has no meaning
2. Life has a million meanings.

First, there's a certainty that death and annihilation awaits not only you, but the Earth in general. It's an astonomical certainty that our sun will supernova and leave the earth a burnt crisp, not to mention all the other extinction level events around the corner.

Second, the million things that give us meaning are the pleasurable experiences we can conjure up during the short period we are here on the earth, in the form of the relationships we have with our kids and other people, and the 'housekeeping' types of purposes. What i mean by that are the curing disease, ending hunger, improving literacy, reducing crime, preventing war, helping other kinds of things.

So the bottom line is, we only have a temporary meaning to life, to reduce pain and increase pleasure, other than that everything is lost to oblivion.

To be or not to be? "To be" is temporary and "not to be" is inevitable.....

I won't give you a long answer.
I think that you should watch a movie from the famous Monty Python titled: MEANNING OF LIFE. It is a very nice movie that will help you to find the answer ;)

My answer is that we should live to find our own answer to this question. Life is not something to be answered except if it helps you to live. I mean that the better way to find your answer is to live. I mean REALLY live, not a try, not a half life, but to spend all his energy to live. And you're right, to love is a very good way to spend this energy. But don't try to be loved Of course, if you are, it is a kind thing. But if you try t be loved despite the consequence, one day you will wake up and be aware that you would have made many bad thinge only for being loved.

Be yourself: become who you truly are.

You're an idealist, I can tell from the "I think the meaning of life is to love and be loved" statement you make. I admire idealists...I am your opposite a realist and feel that the meaning of life is the search for that meaning.

Your question is the excuse that religion has for it's existence. PEACE!

Pay attention, this really is the meaning of life. Do three things everyday and your life will be a happy one. 1. Do something to challenge yourself everyday, something that is slightly uncomfortable but not impossible (don't set your self up to fail!) 2. Do something special for others, create magical moments in your life for those you love and those you meet, be generous!. 3. Expect the very best for yourself and others, focus on the positive in all and every situation and you'll begin to notice that great things come to you. Where attention goes, energy flows.

I really don't know despite that I started asking and looking for answers long time ago!

I often say to myself that such misery and suffering is a nonsense yet helping others makes me feel happy like when I've finished a harsh and long but successful day of work.

And you are right, Love could be the answer when it make us mortals, feel our immortal true nature.

There's no universal meaning to life. All men/women have to dig deep inside their mind to discover who they are and what they want to accomplish with the time they have. The only person that can answer this question is you.

For me, I don't know that yet. I don't truly know who I am. But, I know no one can give me the answer for the questions I have. Don't let anyone force their meaning of life on to you. Be your own man and leave your own set of footprints on the beach.

Right. That's retentive. I love, and I am life, and I came from love, so life is to love. Stupendous. Splendid. Screaming.

Life is but a walking shadow , a poor player who struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more . It is a tale told by an idiot , full of sound and fury but signifying nothing . Wm. Shakespeare
