Having entered business with a drama degree, I'm thinking that a good director has to, in many ways, be a good businessman. I don't know about majoring, but I would take some business management courses.

And psychology ... that may be your double major. Nothing lets a director succeed like knowing the minds of his actors.

Well, there are Film schools you should consider if you are serious about becoming a professional Director.

One of the best schools in the world is the Vancouver Film School. You go to the school and it's all film, you can major in direction, minor in cinematography, acting, artist management, writing for film and television... ect.
They also have one of the best animation and special effects departments in the world.

They have a youtube account,

It's really worth checking out.
Also, film schools intern you out to different production companies and/or agencies once your finished with the program.

They are rather hard to get accepted although, you need to present a portfolio and/or demo reel for acception.
And the tuition can be quite hefty, but they are turning out industry professionals left and right, a recent first-year grad was given a PA job on IRobot the first week out of school, and then a steady slot on Smallville following that. (just someone I know)

Whereas universities will give you the information you need to start your career, but no tools or connections to make it happen.

If your college or university does not have a film school, you should see if there is a photography emphasis in the school of the arts. Also if the university has a communications major, there may be chances to work with television. If neither of those are available, you should probably choose Theatre.

I agree with most of the above suggestions and would just like to add that art classes (drawing especially) may be helpful, directors are in many ways artists.

Hey good for you kiddo!! I dated a director's son his dad directed the exorcist and I dated a getting to be a well known director Ziad Hamzeh actually we were engaged. You have to goggle what you want where in your area etc. Then ask the registration office what courses you have to take and how many.
