First & foremost. Is the driver a trained forklift operator? Ask for a copy of his current licence. 2. Training procedure requires that the forks be lowered to ground level before the truck moves. Forks should only be raised/lowered whilst the truck is stationary and the hand brake is on. If the driver was lifting/lowering the forks and moving at the same time this is contrary to H&S legislation and is a major infringement. 3. Was the truck fitted with both a warning beacon and a reverse beeper. Both are required by law within an area where pedestrians are operating. 4. Contact the local H&S Executive for documentation on the above - they will be more than interested if infringements of any of the above have occured.

The best answer is maybe.....

If you are changing jobs, then you are required to evaulated by a 'properly qualified' person. What constitutes properly qualified? The federal statutes are not clear on this. In an accident, OSHA will not accept anything other than federal certification for investigation purposes.

The company needs to be able to show that you were properly trained every three years, or at anytime you have been deemed to be unsafe for any reason. This training needs to be done by a person who has been properly trained and certified.

Third-party certification is only good under two circumstances. One: your company hires a provider on their behalf. This provider will give the company proof of proper training and certification to meet the OSHA requirement.
Two: You come from another job with a third-party provided certification, and the company chooses to accept this as proof for them.

If your supervisor has never been certified, and the company is using this as their training. They are probably opening themselves up to problems in cases of OSHA investigations or inspections.

Hi Ryan T,

I think he can assess you as competant to drive the truck if you already hold a ticket, but unless he holds an examiners qualification he cannot renew your ticket for any truck: reach, counter, NI, VNI etc. Sometimes, even when they have the examiners certificate, the firm likes to pull in an outside examiner for the renewals.
