Being from the South, that is a common term. I think it is because "rednecks" have a tendency to be hot-headed, or hot under the collar. That and they are usually people who spend a lot of time in the sun and get burned on their face and neck. Those are my guesses- but they are just guesses. I have known quite a few and unfortunately am related to a few also. We use that term more for a person who is lacking in class and who displays an unusually high amount of ignorance.

Common laborers worked in the sun. Their necks got red. The gentry never had to be out in the sun without a parasol. So, redneck meant anyone who worked for a living.

I'm not sure really where it comes from but here in Kentucky when someone's drinking whiskey and they get angry we call that 'getting red' so that might be the red part
and then i guess they are from this neck of the woods! lol
I really have no idea

Montgomery Gentry used to be a redneck. How do you explain that?

originally, it was meant for men who just worked the farms or out doing hard labor, they would have a red 'neck' from the sun beating down on them all day.
now, it has somehow progressed to a multi-million dollar business for Jeff Foxworthy.
