Hi,
I am getting a new computer because mine is old and slow and locks up constantly. Anyhow, I would like to transfer my music, documents, and photos onto my new hard drive. Can someone tell me the easiest way to do this? Is there some kind of portable USB drive that I can buy, and if so, how would I go about using it, do I do a backup, or do I just save to it, etc? THANK YOU !!! Happy Holidays to all,
Andrea

Windows xp had a simple program called file settings transfer wizard......See the links....in Vista they changed the name to Easy transfer....works pretty good...you just have to pick the way you want to transfer...direct usb cable...cd or flash drive...

Buy a thumbdrive or a flashdrive as they are called-
you will need to determine what size you need- but 2 gigs are pretty good at around $20-25 dollars- get one.

Plug it in the usb and the pc should see it. Open the file explorer and then click on the "MY DOCUMENTS" or "MY MUSIC", etc- and "drag" it down to the drive that the windows sees your thumbdrive (usually E:) and "drop" the files there.

On your new computer, plug the USB drive in, then on explorer, OPEN the MY DOCUMENTS on your USBdrive, and then you will see all your files. Press ctl+A to choose ALL the files "within" that folder and then drag it to the C: MY DOCUMENTS- so it will drop the files in there without creating a double folder (i.e. my doc/mydoc/*.*)

and you are all done!

good luck.

USB thumbdrive is the way to go.
(assuming the old PC is running Windows 98 SE or Later)

1 Plug it into the old computer

2 Open the folders with your stuff

3 Open the thumb drive under "My Computer" in a new window (It should be automaticly recognized)

4 Drag your files over to the thumb drive, and they will copy.

When you're done, plug the thumb drive into the new computer, and repeat the process in reverse.

You should get a good external hard drive, from 500gb up. But you have to make sure its a USB powered one, and make sure both computers ahve USB slots. After you buy it, just copy and paste all the documents onto the hard drive, then do it to the new computers hard drive. You can also just store all your documents on the external hard drive and just hold them there.

Hi. Maverick is right if your old machine supports USB (it may not). You can have someone remove the hard drive from the old machine and temporarily connect to your new one, then just copy. If you DO use USB, just plug it in then copy all files you want to save to the USB drive, and from the USB drive to your new machine.

1. You can transfer youf files on DVD's
2. Or you can detach your old hard disk and try to attach it to the new PC. (This is impossible if the case is sealed because it will break the warranty.)
3. Or you can connect both the old one and the new one to one network and transfer the files.
4. Or they can be connected via serial cable (Slow!)
5. Or you can use external hard disk - http://www.dealsonic.com/exhadidr.html
6. Or USB drive - http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/29/buslinks-64gb-usb-2-0-flash-drive-pro-2-series/

Maverick has a good idea, I concur with it wholly but will add:

An external USB drive will also provide you with an external backup should the C drive in the new computer ever fail.

the easiest thing to do is buy a external USB hard drive and copy your files to it and then copy from that to the new computer.

Forget all the trouble (flash drive or external hard drive). Please use USB 2.0 DirectLink PC to PC Cable. Plug in both PC, you can start copy file to the new PC.

Havn't you heard of a cd burner or dvd burner and copying to disk? Burn your files to disc.
