I think that the principal long term resut, was to expel for the most part though not entirely, the European powers from the north American continent, and their political influence on the American colonies.
Though there were a few military excursions by Britain later, they had no far reaching results. And because of the impressive fight put up by the colonists, all of the European powers besides Britain, had to set up and take notice, that there was now their political equal on the other side of the Atlantic.
The French, Dutch and Spanish who supported the colonists, after the war essentially adopted a foreign policy of "hands off" regarding this country.
This paved the way for the Americans to consolidate their geographic and economic gains, and focus their attention on developing a viable political/governmental structure: our Constitution.

Kate IS Great.
Get a grip (on your laptop) and realize that we are not dominated by the Queen of England. That's a start.
Do JUST A LITTLE research and you'll find a lot more.
Truth hurts, doesn't it? Do you think you're hurting our feelings? Think of us when you're in Summer School...
