It depends on which 'metal' things in the water you are meaning.
Presumably you are meaning the 'metal posts' that were sticking out of the water! And if so, these were designed as 'tank traps' ~ or 'traps' to stop army tanks from landing on the beaches.

are they like big X's or something.. they run barbed wire along them.
they are just baracades I guess.. not sure of there is a proper name for them..
