I think you can do it at any speed, as long as you're going less than 15mph more than the lanes you're splitting.
Funny, the handbook doesn't say the law. It just says it's not safe, should be discouraged, blah blah blah. dmv.ca.gov

There are no Ca. laws that specifically address lane splitting.
It's up to an officers descretion, if he thinks you are being reckless.
I've been warned at 50-55, but not cited.
That is to say traffic at 50-55 I was going 65 or better.
My rule of thumb is that if the freeway is going slower than 35-40 I start looking for a slot.

It's a gray area. There is no actual limit, but if a cop sees you doing something -he- thinks is unsafe he'll stop you.
I'd say under 20. I've seen guys do it at 30, even at 60, but I don't think that's safe.
I am very glad to be able to split lanes, especially at commute time when traffic is hardly moving. That's the only time I do it. But remember, if you get into trouble, if you clip a mirror or scratch a car, everyone including the judge will think it's -your- fault because it wouldn't have happened if you weren't lane-splitting.

The speed limit is a judgmental thing up to the posted limit. The catch is that one can only travel at a save speed, obviously, a person cannot safely split lanes at 65 mph on a Calif. freeway.

it's only in cali. and the rule is no greater than 10mph. faster than the traffic around you and under the speed limit, so it's legal at any speed under the posted limit, as long as you're not blowing by people

Legally, it is when the surrounding traffic is traveling under 25mph that you are allowed to travel in between vehicles (to get to the front of a light, for instance).

There is no law that says you can do that on a motorcycle or any other vehicle. Motorcycles and cars have to abide by the same vehicle code - as do bicycles, technically. You can even be cited for running a stop sign, stop light, going the wrong way, etc... on a bicycle.

spliting lanes is illegal, but you can share a lane. Just remember that a police office has the final say. If they fell its an unsafe act they can give you a ticket
