The U.S. Patents & Trademarks Office has information on how you can write and file your own patent. I wasted $2K on a patent atty. who wrote such a bad draft that I dismissed him and wrote it myself from scratch. A preliminary applicaton costs a little over $100 to do it yourself. That's not counting computer, software, paper, time, etc. Once that is on file, look for capital; hire consultants, etc.

The first one is, of course, the toughest. After you get over the mystery, the next one is much easier.

Most importantly, write up your idea and get it witnessed. Otherwise, keep it secret until your have filed for a patent. Once your prelim ap is on file, you can show your idea to others, but it's best to only trust those you need to help you produce the prototype. You must show the earliest proof of authorship to beat out those who try to steal your idea.

The difference between Edison or Bell and the average yahoo is the ability to DO something with their ideas. They develop them at great personal cost and defend it in court and against all rivals. People who SAY they have a new discovery are wrong 99% of the time. And people who say they have to keep it secret for reasons like you give are wrong 100% of the time.

The thing to do is right it out as much as possible. Documentation is the thing that can help fight idea theft. Write down everything, and record dates. Take pictures of your ideas with a newspaper showing the date if you feel nervous enough about it. But whatever you do, write it all down as completely as possible and never give someone else the original, only ever hand out copies.

I would consult a shrink and a psychiatrist to get help with my paranoid delusions.

But then, I haven't made a discovery of a lifetime which all those nasty oil companies want to steal and bury so the world will continue to depend on their oil.

So what do I know?

:-)
