O.K. IE 7 has been out for a long time now and I still decline it when my computer checks for new critical updates. Can anyone tell me what kind of consequences I might experience?

NONE. I keep refusing it also. it isnt all that good, full of bugs.you dont have to take any updates you dont want. make sure you keep updated on the security updates so it keeps IE6 safe. good luck.

Nothing too bad happens although IE6 will be phased out and therefore no more updates keeping you secure, IE7 will become the new Microsoft standard and receive updates through its life. Some people use alternatives like Opera and Firefox but its what suits you at the end of the day. In some ways IE6 will be targeted less with malicious intent as the focus moves to IE7 and some people dont like IE7's ways but you must weigh up the pros and cons and select the one that's best for you

About the only problem with IE6 is that it has been hacked all to hell and Microsoft is no longer supplying security updates for it, and that makes it vulnerable to attacks.

IE7 is a bit hard to get used to, but it works fine and has tabbed browsing.

If IE bothers you, give Firefox a try. I use it almost exclusively. Any more I only use IE when I have to deal with Microsoft. They do not allow Windows updates to work through anything except IE.

You can still use IE6 but it's always best to update for security and new features reasons..
If your afraid of upgrading as many people are due to problems they experience i would highly recommend Firefox browser which will be up to date and have so much more features than IE7 and is a very popular browser.

Well. It depends on what you're using right now.
If you're not using IE you probably can skip the
update for a while. IE is required for lots of crap
on windows but 6 will work for that for quite some
time. If you're using it you will be running out of
security patches as IE6 is considered obsolete.

IE6 is very outdated, but IE7 is a primitive browser as well. The consequences of using ANY version of IE is popups that get through, ads that aren't blocked, spyware toolbars automatically installing themselves through ActiveX, security holes that are left unpatched for years, etc. You should upgrade to a modern browser and forget about IE:

When Internet Explorer 6 stops getting patches (soon), you'll get spyware because 7 will have the proper updates.

Nothing, just there well be a time when MS well only support IE7 and then you won't get any more updates until you update to IE7. You probably still have another year.

You should upgrade to IE7. Tabs alone make it a much better browser. Not to mention better compatibility with websites. There's no reason not to upgrade--even if you are stubborn and don't want to learn the new interface.

IE6 is an outdated browser and you will have more and more problems viewing websites properly as time goes on.
