You talk to Kelly alone so as not to embarrass her of course, even though she isn't showing that kind of respect for Cindi. you tell her that being Jewish isn't something that is bad and that everyone is different and the holidays that some celebrate are not the same for everyone or everywhere. Jewish people celebrate holidays just not the same as hers. And after being nice and explaining what the differences between people (no details so as not to get yourself in trouble with administrators) also tell her that teasing or being mean to someone because of a religious difference, racial difference or just being different is a very bad thing and will NOT be tolerated in your class and should not be done anywhere. Being informed is all you can help her with. She will have to make up her own mind as how she uses the information but making it very clear that its not ok in your class will be a good start. If she learned this behavior at home then theres not much you can do until she decides to make a choice for herself when she is at an age that triggers one.

Wow! Have children always been so nasty? To me it seems like you need to have a talk with Kelly's parents. Although she probably has learned this attitude and behavior from her parents. It appears as though she is seeking negative attention. So don't give it to her. You know what she is going to do, so keep a close eye on her and every time she puts a card on her desk then take it off and throw it out. Give her detention, extra work. Move the children's seats around and make sure Kelly doesn't sit next to her. I use to want to be a teacher, but i honestly dont know if I could deal with the majority of the children today.

Do you know the parents very well? If you do and you have a good feel that Kelly isn't "learning" this attitude from home, definitely let them know what's going on so that they can intervene too. It might be a good idea to have an "in general" discussion with the entire class that different people believe different things and everyone's entitled to do so w/o going into the whole "religion discussion." Maybe use the UFO example, some people believe in it and some don't, neither group wants to be taunted or ridiculed for their beliefs.

You need to call her parents. She is harassing another child. You should also tell your principal about it so that if it happens again she can be suspended for the threat. I have plenty of Jewish friends who recieve christmas cards from me... but that is on a friendly basis. This is clearly not friendly and this child should be punished for her behavior. You should also make her sit in the front of the room next to your desk so that you can monitor what she is saying in your classroom. If she can not act properly in your room, then the embarassment of her sitting next to the teacher may help solve this problem. You must take action, you would not want the other kids parents saying that you knew about it and did nothing.. this could lead to legal issues. Good luck.

I would come up with a solution, proablably talking to kelly's parents, but I would check with the ssistant principal. Religion is something that must be dealt with, with care. You do not want to say something that oculd get you fired or sued.

To change kelly's behavior, i would try to do things from all religions that celebrate christmat hannakuh, kwanza, and whatever else. Make the things fun though, not a project but games. to show that other religions are ok.

First Kelly is name calling and that should be stopped. Putting a Christmas Card on her desk everyday doesn't hurt anyone but ask her if it would be ok if she received a Hanukkah card in return. If not why not? Let her see how her own actions/words could be hurtful when she is on the receiving side.

AS a teacher use these moments to teach diversity, Use the upcoming month to discover the variety of celebrations and beliefs. It is through guidance and teaching that people discover, grow, and learn and hopefully in the end of all this are better people. Also I am unsure what age group this scenario involves, more pushing or telling a child what to do or not to for most age groups isnt effective. Be a leader, be a role model. Good luck!

I wouldn't exactly classify giving someone a Christmas card as a negative action. Even when it is, who cares? If Cindy is strong enough in he faith to be open about it then she shouldn't let such small things like being given a Christmas card get to her, especially if she knows that it is being given to her with the specific intention of aggrivation.

Sarbear is spot on. You need to address this as an EDUCATIONAL experience. First, talk to the principal and formulate a plan. I think too many of us don't understand each other. yes, I agree with many of the people that she is learning this from somewhere and the source needs to be found. I'd also talk to the student and ask the one question. WHY? I think that may enlighten many people.
