Nothing will be done to them. If they take their driver's license, they'll just drive without it. If they garnish their wages, they'll either quit working or find a boss who will pay them under the table. I'm owed about 16 years worth of back child support. Will I get it? lol I don't think so.

Edit:

I cannot ignore "Daisymonster's" quip. I WAS married to him, honey.

NO, because making it a felony would only preclude the future employment of the deadbeat father, thus ending possibility of future child support payment.

Most of the time, what the family court and the media call a "deadbeat dad" it is really someone who has been given a child support payment beyond their means, for whatever reason. There is only a small percentage of people who refuse to pay child support. But the family court system and the principles of it profit greatly by creating "deadbeat dads". They get federal (taxpayer) $$ the more deadbeat dads they have.

For example, my niece (unwed) has a child but gets no support from the father. He's without a HS diploma, has a learning disability and has no job. So, technically, he's a "deadbeat dad" and the court gets federal $$ for it, but logically, trying to get even $85 a month from the kid is like trying to get blood from a turnip.

And if you're going to criminalize that, should we also equally criminalize the custodial parent who breaches the visitation rights of the non-custodial parent? That happens a lot, too, but where is the concern for the parent that gets blocked, illegally, from seeing their child(ren)?

My father was a deadbeat dad, who cut and ran...but I'm not going to take my anger at him and support a one-size-fits-all policy.

No, it shouldn't be a felony. It really is a case-by-case thing. Some people simply cannot make enough to survive on if they pay the court-mandated support. Before tagging that parent (remember, women can be deadbeats too), a court should look at the individual circumstances.

Is it unwillingness, or inability?
Is it short-term due to circumstances, or just plain refusal?

Oh, and let's look at this one: I think that in all cases of paternity fraud (mom cheated on dad and isn't the father), the victim of the fraud should be able to walk away. No other fraud in the world has an "oh, you fell for it so you're stuck with it" clause.

Only if it also becomes a felony for a woman to ALLOW herself to get pregnant by a deadbeat. They bring it upon themselves, and society usually foots the bill... They know full well going into it that the guy is worthless. It's not like it's some great guy who makes tons of money, is loving and loyal, educated, responsible, and all of a sudden disappears as soon as he knocks up his woman. It's usually a turd of a man who once he knocks the girl up, guess what... he acts like a turd. Wow, imagine that...No magic or mystery to it, he's just being what he always was. If women used their brains a little better in deciding who they let get them pregnant, or take a little more care in their reproductive choices they would avoid these problems that many bring upon themselves...

*Some of these women who have children with that type of man should be charged with negligence or child endangerment...

No. The courts historically have made dad's out to be criminals after making them pay exorbitant amounts of child support. Much more than is necessary to raise a child. Then they take driver's licenses away if you fall behind in payments. Now you cannot go to work without breaking the law. Maybe if fairness was the case there would be no need to criminalize poverty!

It is already, it just takes time to make it happen. if he has ignored his court ordered payments and has ignored those judgements he is in contempt and can be arrested and charged.

but if hes a deadbeat just cause he isn't around then I think the mother should also be responsible for not having the sense to not have a baby with a irresponsible man...

I agree. I raised 4 kids alone with not a dime of child support, but he had a new wife, house and 2 new cars. The kids and I had no choice to go on Welfare for a while. What hurt the most, is when he would visit, he would spend a few thousand dollars on them. Support Enforcement did nothing for me. My kids are all grown with kids of their own and they have no respect for him. When one of my girls got married, she invited her father, but I walked her down the aisle, not him.

putting you in detention center is their final hotel. My father owed someplace upwards of 10 grand, yet this did no longer substitute right into a controversy for him till way down the line. i'm 22 now and final 3 hundred and sixty 5 days they have been going to throw him in detention center and make him pay my mom back toddler help, yet my mom replaced into severe high quality and signed some paper asserting she did no longer choose the money cuz she knew she might get anyhow. artwork out a charge plan. you are the daddy so pay the damn funds. permit me permit you recognize it will make a distinction on your babies existence.
