If they said that they were having a hard time feeding their kids. Would you buy it? Would it depend on how many kids they have? Would you think "at least they have a job"?

I might feel sorry for them, but if this person has children, then they qualify for all kinds of free help. They would get free health care, that in itself is worth its weight in gold, probably 3-$400 in food stamps, not to mention a free education and childcare if they want it to better themselves. There is all kinds of help out there. You just have to be willing to apply for it and follow through until they succeed.

Edited:
Handing them money just because you can isn't helping. It is putting a band-aid on the real problem. That is probably lack of an education and lack of ambition. They would have to be showing me that they were trying to better themselves before I would be shelling out cash. Not because I am stingy, but because they will be right back where they started if I stopped. If they get an education, then they can get a better job and support themselves...

It depends on the situation they are in. Where they live can make a big difference also. They can apply for food stamps, but some don't due to pride reasons. I am sure most on here would say they should get a better job, not even knowing where they live and the possibility of even getting another job in there area. Yes.. at least they have a job. And I would help if they were doing all they could on there own.

Depends on how many kids they have. Also, sure, I would think, it was great they had a job, but it may not feel like they are working for much if the paychecks don't take care of the family. Just depends on the situation.

$18,000 per year isn't all that much when you consider the economy. Plus, you didn't say how many mouths this person was feeding, clothing, bathing, housing, educating, etc. Then, consider transportation, insurance, medical expenses. Life is not cheap and $1500 per month may seem like a large sum to support oneself; but, it's an entirely different picture when you have a family.

You can barely take care of yourself on $18,000.00 a year in my area. Add kids to the picture (one is too many) and it can be a real bad situation. Weather you should feel sorry or not depends on why they cannot make more than $18,000.00. (Lack of experience, education, not motivated, can't catch a break, job seeking skills, etc......)

Nope. At 18k they are eligible for WIC, Food stamps, medicaid. The government through family services pay for childcare and housing... so on 18k a year... tehy are making actually 40k PLUS all of those tax benefits at the end f the year, free or reduced meals at school, tuition assistance etc.. When is all set and done, they have it better than some and some folks make a carreer of maintining themselves under the poverty line so they won't incur in out of pocket expenses.

Most of us pay taxes, pay outreageous medical insurance, ridicoulous daycare fees, groceries bills etc... and most of those folks have their housing, medical/dental/optical/medications paid for, daycare paid for, college tuition paid for, groceries PAID buy our tax dime and have their 18k TAX free to live it up.. .so no, I don't feel sorry for them. Some people know how to milk the system.

Good luck

Yes, I'd feel sorry for them. $18,000 isnt enough for a family to live on. It's hardly enough for one person.

Making only $18,000 a year to me is the working poor.

So....I would feel sorry for them even if they had no children.

I would wonder why they aren't making more money. That isn't very much, and it doesn't take a whole lot to earn more....I would feel sorry for the hungry kids.
