all of the criminals

Drugs, the bad economy, lack of job or skill, laziness, previous examples learned.

The more and more people who can't get employment and the more who become addicted to drugs alone increase crime as people either need to survive or support a habit. Add to that tons of other reasons and you see crime going up.
I also think if people had a better life or better means or better upbringing in some cases, the crime would go down with better things offered and more outlets available.

Crime is relative, as it's the people in power who define what is considered a crime. Some things that used to be crimes aren't any more, and now the UK government seems to be criminalizing people for what used to be misdemeanors.

I don't think crime is as black and white as some people would like to think it is, most of us have broken the law at some point, does that make everyone a criminal?

A basic concept of "good verses evil" is the simple answer. Society is set up to where both good and evil are necessasary in order to balance out this world. Lack of money, education, knowledge, or the use of drugs, are just some of the situations that can contribute to the rise in this area.

C.S.Lewis referred to the concept of Moral Law. In each human being there is a fundamental urge to do the right thing. This is the thing that makes you jump into a raging river to save a drowning toddler, even if your own life might be at stake.

This Moral Law is part of human beings, though, so it is imperfect. In some people - sociopaths - it may be so flawed as to be virtually non-existent. These people act upon their selfish, ego-driven concept of their own importance and immunity from the rules the rest of us take for granted.

An overinflated sense of entitlement and a lack of morals in many cases. Usally accompanied by a big ego. A complete lack of respect for fellow human beings.

In a small minority of cases, perhaps it could just be a basic instict for survival.

Corruption, poverty, due to it, many people follow to commit crimes like robbing, inorder to satisfy their needs, and sometimes even kill others so that they would not tell their truth. This becomes a habit for them, and they continue to do so without the fear of anyone. But poverty is the basic reason for such things.
