Uniforms have both good and bad points. I will start with the bad - unfortunately the childhood years are the time for our kids to discover who they are, what does or does not work for them and things that make them most comfortable the uniforms take away from individualization you become just another face in the crowd. The good thing about wearing the uniforms is that it does cut down on the distractions be it the clothes are inappropriate or for material reasons and sort of helps with what you really go to school for -an education, The sad part is if the parents would just take out a little more time or cared a little more at home the schools wouldn't have to create such strict mandates.

I agree that everyone should be able to express their individuality though their clothes.
However, teenagers no longer care about being individuals. They want to follow the crowd. Dress codes prevent school from turning into a competition over who can afford the most expensive clothes. In an time where 13 year olds are carrying $5000 purses, how can the average student fit in? Dress codes level the playing field.

I probably have the most unstrict catholic school ever lol. I'll tell you the rules we HAVE to follow, and the ones that they just don't care about checking anymore. Have to: - wear ID card every day - wear uniform (obviously). Either a polo top (during the fall/spring/summer), or the button down tops (all year round) - No tattoos can be shown. No piercings except for ears. - on dress down day (where we wear our own clothes), we pay 3 dollars and can't have saggy clothes. Also no booty shorts, and tank tops/strapless can't be worn (unless it's one inch) Don't care about checking anymore: - our skirt can be any length. some are sooo short, but they don't say anything. - our shirts tucked in. sometimes they care, some times they don't. - our ID cards. The teachers don't care, it's the hall walkers that do. - sagging pants/baggy shirts. - hair color. some girl colored her hair bright red the other day, the teachers don't care. And they're more. I have a love/hate relationship with my school lol.

schools have dress codes and uniform so no-one shows anyone else up. to make everyone equal and even. imagine if we could wear what we want and someone came in in something ugly or cheap everyone would pick on them because of this by having a uniform or dress code everyone looks the same and this problem doesn't occur. weather you agree with this or not its up to you but thats what i was told in school.

the reason or logic behind having a dress code at a school is control misbehavior, keeps students a little more focused and eliminates gang representation; and most parents like the dress code policy because it eliminates the drama of what to where to school every day.

Yes schools have to have dress codes or the girls would dress like complete sluts and the guys would wear beer and drug shirts to school. Which is not appropriate. Stuff needs to be certain lengths for a reason and certain shirts have to be kept out of school for what they imply or might be offensive.

Uniforms helped put an end to gang problems in Long Beach, California schools. But basically, children have shown poor taste and that effects learning. That is the purpose of schools, not socializing!

Because certain articles of clothing are innapropriate. What if the dress code didn't apply to teachers either? What if you had a really gross, overweight teacher who wore a crop top and a mini skirt because that's what she wants to wear? What if guys wore shirts with naked girls on them or foul language? Would you not be offended?
