I think BMWs are great. I got my first one this year, and still look forward to driving in it. In terms of value, quality, and driver appeal I don't see how you can not like them.
Now I want to address something that some moron said about being patriotic and supporting America. Buying a car of any kind supports America. There is sales tax, gas tax, and ongoing service costs, along with the fact that there are thousands of Americans employed by BMW all over the country.
Let's compare that to the big American brands of Ford and GM. These great American companies are consistently following the business model of shutting down American factories and moving them to Mexico, decimating communities and spitting in the face of Americans who have often worked for these big corporations for years. Go buy a nice Pontiac and you'll see in the small print they are assembled in Mexico with parts from Canada. The only whiff of America in these cars is the fact that the parts took a train ride through America on their way to a Mexican assembly plant.
BMW, along with all the major Japanese brands have all opened plants in America and have created a massive amount of income and employment that significantly helps our economy.
What's the alternative? Ban all 'foreign' cars? Should we cut of trade relations with all countries too? Stop buying from China or Japan? Seriously, walk around your home. I expect the home was built by illegal Mexican workers, and is full of products from China and Japan. So please don't give me this bleeding heart story about buying American.
When I bought my first new car in America I did an exhaustive survey of EVERY major brand of car. I had a completely open mind. But in all the research I did, most American cars depreciate like crazy and are less reliable than Japanese counterparts. Add to that the fact that so many 'American' cars aren't even built in America these days, what's to like?
When the big American car makers will make a nice looking car, that is a good value for money, high quality, is actually built in America, is reliable and modern, and doesn't depreciate like a stone or guzzle gas like crazy, then I'll be the first in line to buy one. But until that day comes I won't buy American. I will instead buy a foreign brand that is a better car.
Don't get me wrong, I support America. But until I see the American car companies supporting America too, I see no reason to give them my business.
One final thing to the poster that talked about maintenance costs. There are none. My BMW has no maintenance costs (except new tires) for 50,000 miles. By that time, I'll have a new one. Both my bosses own Cadillacs that seem to spend more time in the shop than on the road. One of them had an Escalade and it needed a new transmission after just 20,000 miles. Not surprisingly he ditched it soon after that.
One of my friends has a Suburban. The other day the windshield wipers stuck on and he had to stop and remove the fuse from the box to stop them. He just took it in for a new water pump that ended up costing him $1,000! The car isn't even four years old. Brand new the car cost $47,000. Today it is worth $15,000 trade in. A BMW X5 from the same era would be worth $30,000 today. And I know which one would be more fun to drive.

Probably more so. I have had 7 BMWs and wouldn't trade any of them for another car. The performance is unmatched. The design is beautiful. The newer cars you don't like look a lot different from the older cars becuase BMW hired a new design chief, Chris Bangle, and he has approved some designs that aren't "traditionally BMW". But the major BMW designs are still there. The Hofmeister Kink is a design element that has been with BMW for years....its the little bend in the C pillar that sweeps back toward the front of the car. The kidney grill showed up in the 1930's and has been a major design influence since. They are just taking the looks of BMW to the next level. Can't have a 2007 BMW that looks like a 1997 right?

Love is complex emotion. You should not toss the word like that. As far as I can tell, you like the BMW made car and like to drive them.
I have 3 BMWs that I have been driving for past 7 years. I work on all of them. I worked with M20, M30, M50, M60 series of engines. Rebuilt M20B27 engine, and currently working on rebuilding M30B34 engine (E28 535i, 635, first 7 series)
The newer models of cars are designed by Chris Bangle. Many die hard BMW drivers switch to other cars because of his design. He is also responsible for the i-Drive.
I like the BMW cars, but don't see myself buying newer BMWs. I would rather rebuild the engines and transmissions for my existing BMWs and keep it going for next 20 years.

I drove one for several years. So long as I could write the maintenance expense off against my business it was fine. But when I had to pay that expense out of pocket I decided it was time to get rid of it. I have owned many cars over the last 52 years but none were any where near as expensive to maintain as a BMW. Since all parts, even the battery, have to be purchased from BMW (American companies don't make one that'll fit) they have you by the gonads. The average part for a Beemer is at least three times what a comparable part for an American auto costs.

I love them too, but I cant afford one. I worked on them from 82 too 88, what i really enjoyed was test driving the brand new models, such as the M 3, M5 and so on.

I drive a 330 CI with a gearbox (premium and sports package). Had to special order it and love it. Testdrove lots of different cars, including Mercedes, but this one beat all in terms of quality, handling, resale value, weight/power ratio, etc..... I'm in my 7th year now with this car and it still sounds like new.

I have a question back to you -- WHY DO PEOPLE WHO DRIVE BMW NEVER USE THEIR TURN SIGNALS? You're all such rude stuck-up drivers, not to mention unsafe.
