I have been trying to figure this out for a while. Why do you think prices end with .99?

2 reasons. Initially it was to keep employees from stealing. They had to open the til to give you change, so they had to ring it up. The second later reason was pyschological. $19.99 feels as if it is a dollar less that $20, even though it's only a penny difference.

It's all a mind game. Many marketers and retailers end with .99 because it "supposedly looks cheaper than rounding off to the whole dollar. Would you want to buy something that's $.99 or a full $1.00. Other than that, there is no significance.

Either 99 or 95 is the most common on retail pricing...it gives the illusion of a lower amount rather than going to the next full dollar amount.

When some people see $4.99 they see $5.00. But I think they are betting that most people don't actually count the 99cents. Personally, I round off to the highest number. My husband always discounts the 99 cents.

To ensure that the money goes into the till the assistant has to open the till to get the change, the till rings, this gets the attention of the shop owner, who keeps a beady eye open for any fiddling. This was the reason given many many years ago.

It's a marketing ploy so that you think you are getting a better deal! Most consumers only look at the 1st number in the price!

Studies have shown that it LOOKS cheaper to the average buyer, so more people actually would purchase something that is $699 rather than $700. They save a whole penny, but psychologically, they FEEL that they saved more. Weird, huh?

its so that when a customer sees it, they think oh its only (say its 12.99) 13 dollars but really you have to pay tax on it so it is really larger than you thought and most times you give them the 14 dollars in cash to make up for the tax on it. Its a trick to get more money out of you than you think.

To make people think they're getting a deal - because it's not as much as the next dollar up.

I'd like to know why the juice I bought was $.92.
What's up with that?

It is so people will think it is cheaper than what it is. If something is 19.99, I say it costs $20, but my husband will say it just costs $19. A lot of people look at it the same way my husband does.
