I just did my first ever charcoal drawing, and I plan to frame it to give as a Christmas gift. It's very smeary, and I'm wondering what I need to do to it to keep it from smearing.

There are fixatives you can buy at art supply stores, but many people spray drawings with hairspray.

I've used the clear acrylic spray fixatives from the art store, but had the EXACT same results with the lowest cheapest hairspray cans as well. Stuff I used a spritz of hair spray on way back in 1978 never discolored. BUY CHEAP! Spray the drawing from 12-15" away so you don't get gloppy pools of moisture. One or two coats is fine (practice on a piece of paper first). It saves the cost of a whole can of spray fixative.

spray fixative like the others said is the best solution. I've found hairspray changes the color of the paper sometimes.
Just a word of advice with the fixative, make sure your in a ventilated area, and make sure you hold the can away from the image. If it is too close it could actually blow off some of the charcoal . :D

Spray it with a fixative, sold at craft stores.
