Start with a half of cup full and decrease amount until clothes are less than clean;then increase a little.If you use a quality detergent with limited fillers,you really don't need very much.

I generally use less than recommended. We have a front-loading, water-saving washer, so we use about a quarter of a cup of powder per load, a little more if really dirty. There should be some suds on teh surface of the water in your machine; if not, you didn't use enough. You never need to use the recommended amount on the box.

It depends on how dirty the clothes are. The different detergents have recommended amounts on the bottle.

As of lately have you shopped in one week they all switched formulas to some new spectacular 2 x formula...in wee little bottles...(yes i buy liquid)
because its twice as effective.(they say)So i say i would add a touch more for 27 inch machine.But thats just me.I like to make sure things are clean.lol
even my daughter noticed the wee little bottles.
