The desert is a valuable resource for mining and due to that it is over used. It is also overused by people who choose to drive over it in off road vehicles, cattle grazing has also had a large impact on the desert.

For the most part as an ecosystem the desert does not actually provide much to the rest of us on a noticeable level....BUT, there is no doubt for those of us who have spent time in the desert ( I conducted some research in the Mojave of southern california) that it is a very diverse ecosystem that is FULL of life and there are many resources from plants that are in fact being lost when areas of the desert are disturbed.

Desert areas take decades (at least) to rececover from the impact of soil disturbances.

New medicines and natural cures are being discovered all the time and with that being said who knows what greatness has yet to be discovered that lies in desert plants and animals. The uniqueness of the desert ecosystem is largely due to the incredible adaptations of the ecosystem to deal with such a harsh environment.

There are plants and animals unique to the desert biome. Deserts can be used for recreation and may be quite beautiful. Many of the land speed records have been set on the Bonneville Salt Flats. Certain minerals, such as borax, are mined from deserts.

Not sure what you mean by protecting deserts from overuse. Do you mean not overusing land adjacent to the desert for agriculture and forestry, as was done in the Sahel?

I guess that would really depend on which desert we are talking about. Kuwait is a desert, and so is Saudi Arabia, Iraq and others, but what makes them valuable is the oil deposits under them.

^What are you talking about?

Deserts are excellent natural barriers for many people, which can be defensive in some instances. Just an example.

But overuse? um... perhaps you should use your reasoning to answer the question. Might help to use your brain.

different deserts have different values. for instance the Atacama desert in northern Chile is rich in sodium nitrates which is an excellent fertilizer. the Kalahari desert in Africa is home to the Bantu people sometimes called pygmy's. the Gobi in Mongolia is rich in minerals and so it goes.
