Why does it seem one group gravitate towards one party, while the other group gravitates towards the other?

I work at a national lab, and almost every single one of my co-workers is a PhD level scientist or engineer. They're almost ALL devout republicans (quite a few devout Christians in there too). I saw the opposite on the East coast when I was doing research there, however. When I was in grad school it was almost evenly split, with a few socialists and Libertarians thrown into the mix for good measure. In my own personal experience with research scientists and engineers I would have to say that NEITHER party predominates. Sorry to burst your bubble about scientists. I will say that fundamentalist Christians are more likely to vote republican. That's just part of the ideology, same way that welfare recipients with no education are more likely to vote democrat.
