Because the Constitution (remember that little piece of paper?) provides for freedom of religion in the US. Not just Christianity; not just 2 or 3 religions, but all.

We make our laws based on what we think is right, not on a tit-for-tat basis with other countries leading us around like a horse.

Other countries do the same.

That is what "sovereignty" means.
