Americans are so ethnocentric. What we will be telling our grandchildren is that once we had governments run by the citizens rather than the shareholders.
The problem is worldwide. The invasive and insistent growth of corporatism is a graver danger to the western democratic system than Islamic extremism (which is incidentally fueled by our support for the corporatist agenda).
The entire world now has the disease, but we have been a principle carrier. The the citizens of the United States have allowed themselves to be ruled by lobbyists, and have seen their reputation and military used to enforce an antidemocratic agenda. We have been complacently acquiescent as long as our addictions are satisfied, and the birds are coming home to roost.
The Roman Republic was destroyed when the equestrian class, known today as the corporatists, were able to turn the entire state to their agenda of unrestrained greed. Sic transit gloria Washingtonus.

I'm sorry, but I've not found any credibility in the belief that there's some grand NAU conspiracy.
Simply removing barriers to free trade and improving security cooperation between the nations does not mean there is any nefarious scheme to create one North American State with Canada, Mexico and the US.
The leap of faith required to jump the chasm from NAFTA and SPP to NAU makes believing in the tooth fairy seem reasoned and rational.

America began to decline seriously under Reagan, continued its precipitous drop under Bush I and Clinton, and has reached disturbing lows under Bush II. Whether Republican or Democrat, successive United States governments degenerated into an entity which is betraying a majority of its people and is a significant threat to the continued existence of the human species: a failed state.

It suggests to me that part of the right's hatred of B. Clinton stems from the fact that he was a much better conservative, Republican-type than the candidates they were able to muster.
