You already have Note Pad. It is a small word processor, but does not have a spell checker.
Next you could download a "trial" version of Microsoft Office, but that's a big download for just one letter. And, the trial is only for 60 days and then they would want you to purchase it.
Third you can download Open Office. A very good, open source, free, full featured word processor and office suite. It is really a good set of office tools. It not only has a word processor, but also a spread sheet, a presentation program, a graphics editor, and more. http://www.openoffice.org This software is well worth the time it takes to download.
Oh, by the way, Microsoft office Full costs about $450.

Mrs. Bucket or is it Mrs. Bouquet at any rate open office is a great free alternative as the other answerers have stated. I would download and install open office, because it allows you to save in ms office file types that anyone with ms office or open office can use.

You don't need Office to type a letter, use a free word processor like AbiWord:

No, you cannot get a legal copy of Word or Office for free.
However, you can get a sort of trial edition of the software for free from SeneyCentral.com.
Here is the link to the download. It's a large file, so it may take a while to download.
