The two answers I've read are over complicated, a litre is a cube measuring 10cm x10cm x10cm.

A cubic metre is 10 x 10 x 10 litres = 1000. Q.E.D.

1 m³ = 100 x 100 x 100 cm³
1 m³ = 10^6 cm³
10³ cm³ = 1 Litre
10^6 cm³ = 10³ Litre = 1000 Litre

There are 1000 litres in 1m³

1cm³ = 1ml

1m³ = 100cm x 100cm x 100cm = 1,000,000cm³

so, 1L = 1000ml
1L = 1000 cm³
finally,
1,000,000cm³ = 1,000L
1m³ = 1000 Litres
