A birthright is a privlidge a person receives by being born. In other words, just by being born, you are entitled to something; what that something is depends on the person. It could be your birthright to become king, or to be given a family heirloom, etc.

It's like a birthmark on the right hand side of the body.
In times gone by, when a child had a birthmark on the left side of their body, it was believed that they were "sinister" and would be excluded from any inheritance.
However, if the child had a birthmark on their right side (a "right birthmark", or "birth-right mark"), it was a sign of good fortune and they could look forward to receiving their "birth-right", nowadays shortened to birthright.
