Just to add a point. "Fuel Free" is really not true. Our electrical demands are already outstripping our generating capacity. No one is willing to pony up to the fact that Nuclear will have to come back in a big way to cut CO2 emmissions.
The problems that make the battery powered car feasable are still here, battery capacity and safety.

It may seem that way, but all three "old big three" are working on new ways to cut our dependence on foreign oil.
