It most likely is the head gasket. It could also be a cracked head or block, or a bad intake gasket, but the odds are that it is the head gasket!

You do not say how old the vehicle is, or the mileage, so I can not give an intelligent recommendation as to repair/ replacement of the vehicle!

Headgasket for sure. It shows all the symtoms, and it is a very common problem with this engine.

Expect to pay around £500 and make sure whoever fixes it uses the modified multi-layered steel gasket for the repair, otherwise it will go again. Also make sure the cylinder head is skimmed when is removed (the garage can measure it but for the sake of an extra £40 get it done anyway).

If the car has never let you down before and is in good working order get it done. if not, sell it on E bay with the blown headgasket (stating it's blown!) and get a new car.

I am not to familiar with rover 214 but I know with what you described it is probably a leaking head gasket. I don't know what it would cost but I can just about guarantee that it will not be too cheap. If it worth it to keep it then have it done immediately. The water leaking into your oil is not good for bearings and other things. Try not to get it hot because you can warp cylinder heads and cause valve damage and who knows what else. Good luck.

It does sound like the head gasket. It depends on what they find when they dismantle it, but to do a proper job will probably involve having the head skimmed; You might be looking at £200 -£300. There are back-street bodgers who will slap a new gasket on for much less that that, but there's no guarantee that it'll last for long. If I were, you, I'd describe what's happening to a couple of garages and see what they say.

if the car is also overheating it could be yo head gasket and that explains the constant filling up as it is now mixing the water and the oil. if yo head gasket is gone the car might also lose power take it to a local dealer for a hydro test to confirm this and also check for any leaks within yo cooling system. if you have been having this problem for a while it might not be worthy having it fixed but rather use it as a small deposit for another car hope this helps

it definately is your cylinder head gasket, i know this from Rover experience. It will cost about 500 quid tops but you could shop about. and if the car is ten years old you need to find out if it has had a head gasket repair in the past, as the repairer may not be able to reskimm the cylinder head again, so my advice is to replace the car.. sorry mate, but if you need to find another head for it you might be struggling

in the past ive had rovers and if there is water mixing with the water like you say making the oil creamy it deffo sounds like head gasket they not that expensive to buy if you know someone who could do it for you however if you have a garage do it you looking at a big bill i would advise not to run the car as this will cause more damage and could end up costing you more

It sounds like a head gasket problem. It is expensive to replace since you have to remove the head to get to it. It will still be cheaper to replace the gasket than to replace the car.

Have a mechanic do a compression test on the cylinders and make sure that is the problem.

good luck.

hi i had a 214 and had the pressure check out on the water side to see if the head gasket had gone you may be able to do that and the worst thing is it had and got told it would be about £400.00 to fix and could not guarantee it is the car worth it

Sure sounds like a head gasket.

Take it to a shop, for a few quid, you can have it pressure tested, or have a block test done to prove that theory.

As far as cost to repair vs. buying a new car.....it all depends on the car, and how attached you are to it. At this point in it's life, you may well be better off counting your losses and buying another car.
