The specific use of grape juice instead of (alcoholic) wine is a very recent practice. Prior to the "modern invention of grape juice" in 1869, when (tea-totaler) Thomas Welch applied of the new process of pasteurization to grape juice to keep it from fermenting, the universal practice of the churches --including the Baptists-- was to use wine in communion.

That's a good question, I grew up in a Baptist (bapticostal-baptist and pentecostal) church and we always used grape juice. I heard most churches use it for those who were alcoholics so they don't become tempted to start back drinking once they taste the wine.
