what 9/11, kartina and other crisis like these have demonstrated is that in spite of the $7 trillion price tag, our govt is not even capable of even the most basic protections of it's citizenry.

our govt no longer has as a priority the safekeeping of the people or even the long term prospects of the nation.

we are on our own - our govt no longer reflects the people, but only the limited choices that we are offered during election time.

I agree with your assertion that we should be informed citizens and take an active role in our government.

However, our representative government was designed to solve the problems of majority rule. Neither direct democracy nor our democratic republic are perfect. But I think ours system is better than a direct democracy.

Ben Franklin was a staunch proponent of democracy but was wise enough to temper his enthusiasm because he knew that democracy, as superior as it is to monarchy also has problems.

He said, "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb deciding what to have for dinner".

He was alluding to the possibility of tyranny by the majority over the minority. That is why we have a government with separation of powers that includes the Bill of Rights to protect individual rights. And, it includes representative government in the hope that our representatives will overrule majority opinions when they are a detriment to our society. Such as institutionalized racism, slavery, denying women the right to vote, etc.

It's worked pretty well for over 230 years so yeah, I think we should continue to trust in a representative form of government.
