He can be had for a lot cheaper for Johan Santana. Plus he's an ace.

Is Haren ok? Yes. Is Haren good? No. I would trade Haren for Melky straight up. If we dont land Santana I will accept that as a secondary option. Anything more than Melky is a 100% NO!!!!! It's not the teams don't want him... the problem is that Beane wants more than he can get from him and he's the only GM who thinks the way he does. Maybe it does work for him but he has never won a WS so until then the rest of us pros will slap him in the face and take his underaceiving talent.

YOu are missing the point. It isn't that nobody wants Haren, and certainly his asking price is cheaper than Santana (as it should be -- he isn't near the pitcher).

The answer is that Beane is asking too much for him right now. Haren is an ace, but a relatively unproven one. He doesn't have the durability record or the 5+ years of ace status to merit what the A's are asking right now.

If the price comes down a bit, he might be dealt, but the era of teams giving up many top prospects for a guy like Haren has ended. Teams have realizied that building from within is the way to go for the most part, and just aren't willing to part with all the qualtiy being asked for Haren, at least right now.

After all, the track record of A's stud pitchers outside Oakland is spotty at best. Mulder has been a bust. Hudson was mediocre until last year, and Zito was a disaster.
Caveat Emptor from Oakland.

Hey Galbraith,

i think it's the whole domino effect. Right now Santana and Cabrera are taking up all the headlines, but it's kind of like after A. Rod and Lowell signed. There are not really any true front-line starters out there on the free agent market so once Santana is traded - his suitors will begin looking at other options and Haren would be a good 2nd choice at a much lesser price.

Billy Beane might be asking a little too much for him right now as well...

Kindly,

Nickster

He is not Johan; Johan is the ace of all aces right now, Haren is a good pitcher but has yet to have a complete season. He gives up too many long balls, he is too inconsistent in comparison to Johan, it is like comparing apples to oranges!

Actually the Rangers have expressed intrest in Haren and might actually be able to sneak in and make a deal while everyone else is all goo goo eyed and wishing to get Johan. So there might be something there but they're also looking at Dontrelle Willis and you got to remember as much of a Rangers fan as I am we suck when it comes to starting pitching.........

If Dan Haren goes anywhere I would be willing to bet he winds up heading to the NL. The AL knows he can be had, giving up the long ball as much as he does. But under the wings of the right pitching coach, he could get better. He's still young enough to overcome flaws in his pitching.

Oakland will want too much for him, so he'll either renegotiate and resign with them for less, or you'll see him either in a Cubs or Mets uniform.

I see Dan Haren either in a Red Sox, Mets or CUBBIES uniform. It would be beneficial for him to go to the NL because he won't have to suffer facing DH's like Big Papi, so his ERA would be lower. And now with more and more experience, he gets better. So, as a Cubs fan, I'd love it if he came to us and we are loaded with great, young prospects that we can trade.

Or what about the possibility of D-Train coming back to the Cubs?

Watch him end up being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals. The 2 organizations have a good relationship (although Walt Jockety is now gone) and the Cards are looking for a solid pitcher.

I would like him on the Yankees but they are set on making a big splash with Santana. Haren would fit right into our rotation and you're right he wouldnt cost as as much. But what do we know?????
