Freshwater tanks are easier to take care of. Saltwater tanks are difficult to take care of, and are DEFINITELY not for beginners in the hobby of caring for fish. They are also more expensive to maintain. The fish you can get with a salt water tank are much more beautiful (in my opinion) but unless you are a seasoned fish buff, they wouldn't be my choice for you.
May I suggest that you start off with a small freshwater tank, then move on to progressively larger ones. If after a few years, it's still your thing, then go for a saltwater aquarium.
Either way, it's an expensive hobby but very fulfilling. Good luck!

It's really a tossup between the two. "Coldwater fish" generally refers to goldfish. Goldfish require a larger tank because they are very dirty, releasing ammonia from their gills and waste. A ten gallon tank is a minimum for a single goldfish (assuming it doesn't get any bigger than a few inches [Also, don't believe the myth that a fish only grows to fit its environment. A smaller tank will slow a fish's growth, but it will keep growing.])
Tropical fish need a temperature of about 75-80 or so, so you have to put a heater in the tank. They can be kept in smaller tanks as well (as long as numbers are appropriate). Bettas, or siamese fighting fish, can live in very small tanks because they have a labyrinth organ which helps them get oxygen from the air (though you should still have a filter circulating water in your tank).
Aside from keeping the water the right temperature and getting an appropriately sized tank, there's no real difference in caring for coldwater or tropical fish. Both types can get diseases but there's no greater risk for one or the other.
All you've got to do as far as maintainence for the fish is feed them every day and change the water and filter weekly.

Both are just as easy to look after if you know what you are doing, research the fish before getting them, have an appropriate sized tank for the fish you want, know about cycling a tank, don't mix incompatible species of fish..

"Cold" water tank are probably more work,(most cold water fish produce lots of waste).
Tropicals need a little more equipment.
You decide.
