Do you think a person displaying self-deprecating humor is a very secure person or one who is more of a "I'll get myself before you do" person?

A good sense of self-esteem in a person allows self-deprecating humor to flow freely. They are able to laugh at their foilbles and share it with others. I find it a healthy outlet and sense of humor. And one we all can relate to.

That's a tough one. Most people that do self deprecating humor are fine, that's what people can see and understand, it's the most universal type of humor. There is a fine line between humor add self flagellation. If you never hear anything but self deprecating humor and the remarks are too cutting and more hateful, then you cross that line to self hatred.

I believer that would depend on the individual. One with great self esteem, solid personality or whatever, may very easily be a "real stand-up comic" and be able to handle this type of humor. The other side of the coin would, as you say, be self-deprecating at best.

I think it depends on the frequency and severity. A person who is willing to make fun of their self could be
a) confident enough in their skin to be able to recognize and point out their own flaws in an effort to make others feel less uncomfortable.
b) unusual sense of humor
c) feels that if they do it first- it leaves others with less ammunition to throw at them.
d) low self esteem
It is one of those things that takes time to get to know a person to figure out.

I think someone who leans on self-deprecation is masking insecurity, someone who does it now and then is reasonably secure.

Heh well could be either or both. I use the latter at times to become the former, some weird form of exorcising anxieties about small faults or characteristics.

I believe this person uses this tactic to get other people to say the opposite about him or her. Very insecure.

I'd say that person is really insecure. If they know their own flaws like that and they talk about it like they're thinking about them all the time makes them seem like a really insecure person to me.

Only a secure person feels confident enough of him/herself to poke fun at him/herself.
