i have a pair but a friend of mine said they were preppy ehich really ticked me off because i really do not want to look preppy in anyway.

Nooo, I mean preps can wear them if they like, but checkerboard vans alone aren't preppy. If you like them, go ahead and wear them! Don't care about what your friends think.
