there is no such type of problem in urban areas of india, but confirm before going about rural and urban areas, there are different type of toilets in India.which is more comfortable than urs.there is no toilet tissue roll with toilets ,u have to wash ur everything with cold water.or may be if water is not available then with a mud stone.it will hurt u but u have to bear.it is better not to go to India in rural areas, dont feel shame on farting with others,it is normal in india.

Thinkin yer was a feller when I saw this I was gonna say no prob the whole place will seem like a toilet to you. However the best advice I can give you is give the place a wide berth and hang on to your health integrity and comfort. If you are seeking to do charitable works there then may I suggest one good thing you could do is send a few copies of "the Secret" they need it pretty badly out there too.

The toilets are a hole in the ground, unless you are at a posh resort, in which case they are just like western toilets.
Wear skirts instead of pants and flat shoes so that you can squat without losing your balance. Carry travel tissues with you for toilet paper in a fanny pack. Indians rinse off with water and you won't find toilet paper supplied, but a bucket and a hose. Also take along that hand sanitizer that hangs from your belt loop, and you will be all set!

small addition to someone's response, it's salvar (not salmwar) kameez, just so you don't confuse people. indian toilets are not made to hande toilet paper so i would be very reluctant to throw toilet paper in a toilet (look for a garbage if possible) because it might back up
urban areas you'll often find western toilet, just go out of your way to visit any hotel lobby that you walk by
by otherwise, squating toilets (which you will find in modern day tokyo, throughout china and many other countries so its a good idea to learn how to use)

I don't know, but I sent the question to someone from India who might. I hope she answers it. I was going to give you her contact information in an e-mail but you don't allow those... so hopefully next time she comes on, she will be able to answer it.
I DO know that the people from India as a whole are very accommodating and if they are able, they will help you in any way they can.
P.S. Pick up a very large salmwar kameeze for me while you are there. :-) they are cheaper if you get them from India than picking them up in the United States and I LOVE to wear them.

I think that Indians have survived thousands of years, you may have to adjust your thinking a bit. When in the country it is easy to pee behind a bush, busues will stopp in suitible places, in towns you have to live with what you get. 'Elephant's feet' loos are preety sannitary, if they have running water.

I've heard things about toilets in India that won't put your mind at rest.
Bushes will always do though!

All depends on what place in India.
In some parts of India, people don't even know what a toilet is
