I am 23 years old, helthy and so isnt my partner. I had blood work done to check for down syndrome and everything came back fine. I have been for 3 level 2 ultra sounds now and they advised me to have a amniosintesis. I had that done yesterday, I am terrified to find out the results. I never thought of having any complications although it happens. They are ruling out if the baby has down syndrome or if its just premi. Any advice? What do u think my chances are? I dont know much about this stuff.

Not necessarily downs...we have had two little girls who both measured about 3 weeks smaller than actual gestation...Both were born small 5lbs 13oz & 5lbs 7oz. Both are perfect.

I'm not sure why your doctor would want you to have an amnio if your screening test did not show any risk for Down's Syndrome. It seems odd that you would be asked to have such a risky procedure. Are you sure there's not something else they're worried about? Is it just because your baby is small? I'd say that, if your bloodwork didn't indicate a risk for Down's Syndrome, the chances of your baby having it are slim to none.
There's a chance your doctor miscalculated your baby's fetal age and you're simply not as far along as your thought. Not everyone has a perfect 28 day cycle and sometimes women can conceive a week or two off of what the numbers indicate. You might want to see another doctor for a second opinion before you agree to undergo any more invasive tests.

Wait for the results, if the tests show a positive, this doesn't mean the baby is definitely a downs, it just means there is a possibility. There could be many reasons for a small fetus. smoking, drinking, lack of good nutrition just to name a few. Waiting can be difficult, but don't make any hasty decisions, there are much worse thing than having a child with a disability. You will love this child whether it is "normal" or not. A definite time when conception took place could also be in question. Don't panic, wait for the results and ask lots of questions.

The amnio is very accurate, it looks at the chromosomes and if there are 3 chromosomes 21, instead of the normal 2, then the baby has Downs. I'm sure your baby doesn't, it's very rare for a 23 year old to have a baby with Downs. My daughter always measured small, and was healthy when she was born, just had a petite frame like me.
I waived all those tests because they aren't very accurate, and an amnio carries a small chance of miscarriage so I would never follow up with one. Just not worth it to me. I had the sonogram and that was it.

I chose not to do amnioseintesis because my Dr. told me that you can get a false positive on this. Although I know several women who have done it and it was fine. Don't stress yourself over it, wait for the results and then go from there. I am sure you won't love your baby any less whatever the outcome may be. I wish you the best of luck.

I'm not sure why they advised you to have amnio. You are young to have that sort of test. This really frustrates me, you should not have to be having this sort of stress. I find often doctors don't tell the mothers what real concerns they have because they don't want to create unneccesary worry but we are not stupid. Obviously we (you) know something is up. I would love to tell you not to worry, but I think what you should do is call your OB office and ask to have the doctor call you back ASAP, and ask him exactly why the suggested amnio and what are they concerned about. Do not accept any obscure answers. Remember they work for you. You are the boss.

maybe your due date is off by a couple of weeks. that can happen because some women cant remember their exact days from their last menstrual cycle. and u/s isnt always that accurate. my first due date was july 21, then it was moved to july 10 i had my daughter on june 29

The baby is just smaller. My baby was and I turned down that test as you can misscarriage from it. I am sure your baby is just fine as mine was. How many other signs do you have. I had 3 signs and he still didn't have it! good luck!
