Get Avira Antivirus

http://www.free-av.de/

When it detects a virus, you can delete it

I also HIGHLY recommend Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic.
I have tried other free antiviruses, like AVG, which has poor detection rates (people say they have never had a virus with AVG - that's probably because it never detects them!).
I found Avast used too much CPU and memory usage.
Avira AntiVir used VERY little system resources, and it's detection rates are absolutely amazing for a free antivirus.
See http://www.AV-Comparatives.org/ for recent AV tests... AntiVir is doing extremely well.

I would recommend uninstalling Norton, it is not very good anymore and uses far too much system resources.
Apparently it is difficult to uninstall and leaves a lot of rubbish left in the registry, etc. so you might want to use the Norton removal tool from their website.

I would also recommend downloading and running an AntiSpyware scanner. I recommend A-Squared free and SuperAntiSpyware. Both are known to detect and remove very difficult trojans and spyware. They work well with Avira.

Both are FREE and can be downloaded here:

Good luck!

Uninstall that Norton junk! Have to agree with jibabarr! Scan with Antivir and Spyware Doctor Starter Edition, both free and available @ www.download.com, and you will find even more baddies lurking in your pc, GUARANTEED! Antivir far surpasses Norton in virus detection and Spyware Doctor detects more malware/spyware than any other program, period! Just give it a try, if you like norton more go back to it, but at least try this first! You won't regret it.

The two most popular free anti virus programs would be Avast! and AVG.

I have been using AVG for 3 years on multiple systems in my home and have had no infections.

If you do not mind changing your software after a few months, there are multiple commercial products that will give free software with 6 months or 1 year of updates - you would have to pay for the updates after that. You can even get Norton for free with the Google pack - it comes with 6 months of free updates.

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than most "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. Uses less then 10 MB RAM on my machine. And did I mention that it's free!

BTW, someone has suggested Spybot Search and Destroy to you. Very bad information. Spybot is an anti-spyware, NOT an anti-virus.

Good luck.

Just about any anti virus program can be set to run in the background, just make sure that you also have it set to do automatic updates or it won't know what to look for. Also be prepared for some system slow down. Running large programs that continually scan your system is going to use up quite a bit of you system's resources.
