Cafe Euwaite

Neon OPEN sign tilts in the window,
Torn green umbrella, flower pots empty,
Café Macabre lunchtime special prices,

Remade soup d’jour, chilled bat brain compote,
Salad of new mown hay with salt water,
Mocha Represso, bad telling tea leaves,

Nameless meat sandwiched with wilted lettuce,
Condiments thick red, flavorless mustard,
Jellied desert, brown mounded form,

How much, the tab for this indigestion?
And the tip for the author, “Find a profession.”

You know, you're really good. Bat brain compote. Where do you get this stuff? Mocha Represso?!? Oh, there's a question here. Yes, I'd like a seat, gimme some of that mystery meat and some Pepto Dismal.

Dragons live forever, not so little Jackie Paper.

I like this poem very much and the imagery is great. At first it I thought it was just a whimsical account of a not so impressive cafe and that may be exactly what it is. However, after rereading it, I came to feel as though this poem is more like a self portrait of the artist during a not so confident or overly critical period in time. This is especially true in the second stanza. Anyhow, I usually avoid talking about what I think a poem means, because in all honesty, only the poet knows and the rest of us can only speculate. Regardless of what it means to you or to me, I really enjoyed it and that's what matters. Keep up the great work.
