Use orange peel. It really works. Getting a dog is a useless solution. I have one and he's scared of cats!!lol
Seriously, spread orange peel around your plants and pots, they hate the stuff and will go elsewhere

I used to keep a pile of small rocks near the back door to interrupt cats during their nasty activities in my garden. My neighbour (whose cats were the main culprits) complained and threatened to report me. So I every time her cats pooed in my garden I collected it, knocked on her front door and gave it to her.

Someone told me to buy a curry plant - I did and planted it right where they used to come under the fence. I don't have a cat problem now. I think they don't like the smell.

I have had good results with cayanne pepper (the cheap stuff from the Dollar Store) sprinkled in the garden or at least around the edges. I have also placed pinecones in the area. Cats don't like uncomfortable areas to do their business. Plastic forks, tines up, stuck into the ground also work.

If you live near a zoo, buy a sack of tiger poo and spread that around. Cat's will soon get the message that there might be a bigger one about - and for all the thumb-downers, this is a REAL answer which works, so go away ! ! !

It's a tough one! Once they have taken a liking to your plot ... you could try the citrus zest option and/or pepper sprinkled around, or mothballs (well anything very pungent really) and add a spiky mulch - holly, pyracantha or berberis trimmings. Alternatively if you have the time and inclination sit and spray them with a hose when you see them - they HATE this! Most shop bought preparations only work until it rains :-( Good luck!

I got this from Hints from Heloise, tried it and it works......... fresh coffee spread on top. The cats do not like the smell. I used it on my lawn. No more land mines from those filthy creatures, and it gave a pleasant smell.

I have often seen people putting containers of fresh water around their gardens to stop animals messing everywhere.

This may just be an old wives tale, but my grandmother always put moth balls in her mulch and it seemed to keep the neighborhood cats away.
