I have the online protection from AT&T Yahoo! I put the AGV on there to get rid of a virus/trojan. Now when I start up I'm getting a message that I need to remove the AGV to run the AT&T virus software? I'm not sure what to do. I'm also getting a message that windows can't find C:\windows\system32\proper.exe so I think I still have something on my computer that I need to get off. I guess this is two questions, but I'd appreciate any help on this.

Never run two anti-virus programs at the same time. They will fight each other and cause all kinds of problems. Remove one of them (probably the AVG) at once. Go to the Control Panel and the Add/Remove icon and uninstall AVG.

The "proper.exe" error is probably because that file was deleted, but a reference that calls that file was not. Click on the Start button and select Run. Type in: msconfig
In the windows that appears go to the Start Up tab
Look down the list of items for any reference to proper.exe. When you find it, check that line so that your computer will not attempt to load the file in the future.

Finally, go to http://ccleaner.com and down their free Ccleaner program. Run the registery cleaner in that and it should permanently remove the registry entries that is calling proper.exe.

The use of 2 or more anti-virus programs at the same time can cause major conflicts. The 2 scanning engines will fight each other to scan every file that you read, write or execute which can cause a major computer slowdown. For the same reason, using 2 A-Vs can cause you to have less protection from the various malware, not more.

(Using an anti-spyware and a firewall with an anti-virus is good, however and is recommended)

You might consider choosing just one and removing AVG.

AVG Anti-Virus is crap!

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. People of their ilk love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

Do you know what kind of trojan or virus you have? I don't know much about AT&T's virus protection, but from what you described, it sounds like they don't play nice with any other virus protection.

First, I would try to do a system restore back to a point where you know the virus didn't exist, but chances are that probably won't work but it's worth a shot. Are you using XP or Vista or other? Just let me know some more info and I'll try to help.

Yup, only use ONE anti-virus program. Only have one installed, remove the other.

Having used McAfee (paid version), Norton (internet security, etc - paid and corporate versions), WinProxy anti-virus (paid version), and a host of others, I find that AVG Free works and has the least overhead in resources. It finds viruses and trojans. I am probably a noob since I have only been working on computers for 25 years, vice those who have invented the things. Ford, Dodge, Chevy. Whatever works for you. Just don't talk religion or politics (or anti-virus programs) and we all will get along fine. ;-)

You can only have one anti-virus program running on your computer at a time otherwise they interfere with each other. You must remove one of them and let the other do its job.

PS I used to have AVG but I found AVAST to be much better ; it is also free.

I was told once that you aren't suppose to have 2 anti virus programs on your computer. You probably need to uninstall one of them.

get rid of both those programs and run a credible anti virus software....norton, bit defender, the shield deluxe or CA. All are very affordable and well worth it
