A very good and difficult question. If I could attempt to answer it, I would first look at the wording you used. "What we were meant to do and be". To me this connotes a 'fate' or a track laid out beforehand. Whilst I believe that our genetic makeup and code predisposes us to behave in certain ways I do not like the concept of fate. (Please note that I stated "Do not like"). I believe that we can choose to move beyond our fate or predisposition, to the higher realms.
(Advancement of science for example). The only clear way to choose is to look at the current situation and set our sights (goals) to what we want to accomplish. America is full of people who are innovative and it's history is brimming with those who were inventors. This is a true testament to the 'freedom' of choice this country is based on. So, to finally answer your question, it is a choice we make what we are meant to do and be and not something we cannot change. We have to take responsibility for our actions and have faith / belief in what we are doing. It is always about this 'moment'. Your strong convictions (that you are doing what you are supposed to be doing) is at the core of this wonderful question.

Thank you once again for reminding me of this. In answering your question I was forced to gaze upon my own life. I was starting to doubt....

Rena, if I could answer this question with absolute conviction, I would know the secrets of the universe!

I have taken the attitude that I'm probably doing what I'm supposed to be doing. I am inclined to believe that the universe, God, fate, what ever you want to call a higher power, pushes us in the direction we're supposed to go. The idea that there are no coincidences is part of that theory. The old friend we run into who introduces us to the right person wasn't a coincident. Walking down a street we never take and finding the perfect apartment for rent wasn't a coincidence. Running late for your flight and missing the plane that crashed wasn't a coincidence.

When we're not supposed to do something, things will keep coming up to block it. When plan A fails, we'll fall back and fail at plans B,C, and D... then know that we're not supposed to go that direction.

I hope this theory is correct. It gives me comfort.

I don't believe that we ever can know that what we are doing is ABSOLUTELY what we are meant to do, that is, while we are in the present. Considering that time is a uni-directional dimension, we can only "look back" and see if what we have done is appropriate with re guard to "meant to do" (hind sight is 20/20). I also feel the same holds true for eternity. When our "time" on earth is done, only then will God reveal His will for our life. Meanwhile, it is our job to study the human being owners manual(the Bible)and do our best to be in the center of Gods will. No penalty for screwing it up(Grace) so just do your best

Last time we needed to do some soul searching we went for a long hike in the mountains all alone. Was planning on spending the night on a mountain top in meditation waiting for the sun rise. Never did make it to the top of the mountain, ended up camping by the lake. In the middle of the night we got scared and hiked 13 miles back to the car. Moon light mountain hiking can be quit beautiful. When we finally reached the parking lot. This mountain lion walks right in front of us. Still not sure what the moral of the story is and those tuff questions still aren’t answered.

“the hardest thing in life is figuring out what you want”

We learn from experience* Therefore what I am doing today may or may not be what I am meant to do in my future* There is no way I will ever know if I don't do new things & go new places* We make choices each day that really do influence who we will be in the future but we also make decisions that can change our direction at every given point*

Every choice you have made has led you to where you are today. And you always have a choice to lead you where you want to be by the next choice that you choose.

Life is full of choices, except for one. You must choose to breathe. Without breathing, then you will be dead. All the other stuff is choice!

And your choice does produce a certain effect. And is up to you how you judge the effect for your life. And choosing that choice constantly is how you live your life at the present moment.

Remember, even if you do not choose, you still have chosen a choice!

Just like at sea, or hiking, we might have to reevaluate our life all the time. We never really know as it happens if we're on the right path or not; it's always after some mistakes, detours that we then realize if we kept the same compass or not. Then we ajust. But it takes some times to see that!

You have to become aware of your karma. What do you need to lose and what do you need to win in life? What are the lessons? Where are the rewards? Or instead you can just focus on the big picture; spiritual growth is the purpose; make good decisions; be altruistic.....Or you can individuate further; be creative; unique. Discovering Self means looking beyond.
